Health, safety and the environment have always been key focuses for the CBM. For over 15 years, a dedicated group of members and our officers has been working together to review accident data, track new legislation, and share best practice across the sector.

The group meets formally each quarter, with meetings often including site visits to give members a chance to see how safety improvements are being implemented on the ground.

We also lead the national Safety & Health in the Metalforming Sector (SHIMS) initiative, which is designed to reduce workplace accidents by gathering sector-wide statistics, identifying trends, and exploring causes and solutions.

Meetings typically feature industry speakers, practical case studies, and regular contributions from a Health & Safety Executive (HSE) inspector.

To strengthen this work, we’ve recently brought in a health and safety specialist. This means we can now gather data from outside the membership too and carry out deeper analysis to support even better outcomes for the whole sector.
